Developing as a Professional Educator

Professional Goal

This 2023-2024 school year, I joined the Computer Science Trailblazer Professional Learning Network. I would like to focus on using what I learn to effectively implement computer science education with my kindergarten students. My aim is to foster a love for learning technology skills in young students while ensuring that they have a strong foundation in this essential field for the 21st century.

What Actions Will I Take?

I will pursue ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance my knowledge and skills in integrating computer science into the curriculum, including strategies that are hands-on and developmentally appropriate for my students. In addition, I will collaborate with speakers and other educators to share best practices, resources, and ideas.

How Will I Measure Goal Attainment?

To effectively measure my goal, I will conduct observations of student engagement and comprehension, assess student performance on lessons and projects, and reflect on student data, as well as my teaching practices, instructional strategies, and professional growth. I will gain a comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of my goal and make data-informed decisions to improve computer science in my classroom.

Actions to Remain a Connected Educator

1. Professional Learning Networks: I have joined online communities, such as the Kindergarten Teachers Facebook group and follow Instagram accounts such as @educationtothecore to connect with other educators, share resources, and collaborate on best practices.

2. Attend Conferences and Workshops: I will continue to participate in educational conferences, workshops, and seminars to stay updated on the latest trends, research, and strategies in teaching.

3. Collaborate with Colleagues: I will emphasize on not only collaborating with my grade-level team but teachers within my school and district to tap into the collective expertise of my peers, leverage diverse perspectives and strengthen my teaching practice to better meet the needs of all students.

What Will I do to Sustain the Energy?

1. Practice Self-Care: I will nurture my own needs by maintaining a healthy work-life balance, setting boundaries, engaging in activities that promote physical and mental well-being like working out, going on walks, and watch anime.

2. Set Realistic Expectations: I will set attainable expectations for myself and my students, recognizing that teaching is a journey of continuous improvement.

3. Stay Positive and Resilient: In the face of challenges and setbacks, I will maintain a positive attitude. I will remind myself that every day is a new opportunity to make a difference in the lives of my students, and my enthusiasm and optimism will inspire them to persevere and succeed.

Advice for New Teachers

1. Seek Feedback and Reflect: Seek feedback from colleagues, mentors, and students to gain insights into your teaching practice. Engage in regular reflection to evaluate your successes, challenges, and areas of growth, and use this feedback to inform your professional development journey.

2. Stay Organized and Flexible: Use organizational skills to manage your time, resources, and classroom effectively. Be prepared to adapt and adjust your plans as needed to meet the evolving needs of your students and respond to unexpected situations.

3. Build Supportive Relationships: Foster positive relationships with colleagues, administration, and students’ families to create a supportive network.
